The best practices for any modded game is to install Steam outside of the default C:\Program Files (x86)\ folder, this will save you a lot of time and aggravation with Steam later on, as well as allow you to use wghost81's amazing PatcherGUI (which is covered in depth here). While not mandatory, putting Steam into "Offline" mode before playing can prevent some of the weird Steam SaveGame issues.
